Story

One photograph. One ocean. Four months too late.

I

Talisay

Renato Vulco grew up in Talisay, Negros Occidental, between cane fields and the sea. His mother raised him alone. His father was an American, a Black electrician from California who had worked a contract in the Visayas and left before Renato could walk.

He didn’t look like anyone around him, and he didn’t sound like anyone either. At six he was rapping Gloc-9 verses at barangay fiestas, every syllable in place. Nobody taught him. His lola said it was in the blood. He took that literally.

II

The photograph

All he had of his father was one photograph and a surname. He studied it for years: the smile, the work clothes, the chain around his neck.

At 24, scrolling late one night, he found the same face on Facebook. Older. A profile in Vallejo, California. He didn’t message. He saved. Three years of call-center night shifts, writing verses between calls, and then a one-way ticket.

III

Four months late

He arrived to a quiet house and an aunt he’d never met. His father had died of cancer four months earlier. They had never spoken a single word to each other.

“I came here to find my father. I found out who I was instead.”
IV

The hard years

Warehouse shifts. A cousin’s couch. A country that didn’t know where to place him, and sometimes didn’t try.

What he had was the thing he’d always had. He wrote in English, Tagalog, and Hiligaynon, sometimes in one bar, about a man he’d only met in a photograph and about belonging to two places at once.

V

The voice

He named his label after the two things that carried him there. Quota, for the night shifts that bought the ticket. Echo, for the voicemail his aunt kept, the only time he ever heard his father’s voice.

“Weight of Gold” is the record he couldn’t have made in Talisay, and couldn’t have made without it.
